Iran highlights volume of saffron produced in Lorestan Province

About 1,100 kg of saffron were produced in the Lorestan Province (western Iran) in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2019 - March 20, 2020), Director of Agriculture Department of Lorestan Province Abdolreza Bazdar told IRNA, Trend reports.

According to Bazdar, the saffron is grown on 380 hectares in Lorestan Province.

Bazdar added that the revenues value of saffron planted per 1 hectare is 12 times more than wheat that planted dry-farming land.

"Lorestan province has great potential for the cultivation of medicinal plants in terms of environmental and economic development, and it is possible to grow medicinal plants on 3,500 hectares," he said.

The official said that at present, medicinal plants are grown on 2,800 hectares land in Lorestan Province.

According to the director, wheat and barley are considered strategic products in Iran. However, economic development cannot be achieved by growing these products alone.
