Azerbaijani silk on its way to new markets

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 16

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

Azerbaijan exported 9 tons of raw silk to Turkey this year, Director of the agrarian production and trade department of the Azerbaijan Industrial Corporation OJSC Ilham Bayramov told Trend on June 16.

According to him, in 2020, a contract in the amount of over $1 million was signed.

The director noted that ties with Chinese, Korean, Italian and Japanese companies were established, and samples of the products were sent out.

Currently, negotiations are underway regarding exports, he said.

"At the same time, various products made from silk, silk fabric and kalaghai [traditional Azerbaijani women's headgear] are sold in the local market," he added.

Bayramov emphasized that in recent years, raw silk produced in Azerbaijan has been exported mainly to Iran and Turkey.

“It should be noted that due to the coronavirus pandemic, prices for raw silk fell sharply on world markets and the demand for this product decreased,” he said.

Azeripek LLC purchases raw cocoons at 4 manat ($2.3) per kilogram from the silk-breeders, and the state pays them subsidies worth 5 manat ($2.9) for the cocoons’ production.
