Georgia plans to harvest, export large volumes of blueberries

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 22

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

In 2020, 250 tons of blueberries will be harvested on an area of 225 hectares of land in the Georgian region of Guria, Governor of the Guria region Zurab Nasaraya said, Trend reports citing Georgian media.

Agricultural development is becoming increasingly relevant for the Georgian government. In recent years, much attention has been paid to the cultivation of high-yielding crops in different regions of the country.

In the framework of state programs, authorities actively help farmers involved in the cultivation of high-quality blueberries.

"The process of cultivating gardens in the region is proceeding intensively," Nasaraya said.

According to him, the region has become one of the most advanced in terms of berry production, and the blueberries are planted on several dozen hectares.

The governor, along with Deputy Minister of Agriculture Solomon Pavliashvili, visited blueberry plantations in the village of Naruja of the Ozurgeti municipality, owned by the Georgian Blueberry company.

Since 2016, the company has been a participant in such programs of the Ministry of Agriculture as "Plant the Future", "Preferential Agricultural Credit" and "Assistance to Agricultural Production"

The company received funding in the amount of 100,000 lari (about $34,000) for planting gardens and arranging irrigation systems. The projected crop this year at the plantation is 80 tons. The company employs 150 locals.

A significant part of the blueberries produced in Georgia is exported, which further increases the interest in this crop.
