Georgia stops exporting sheep to Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 30

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgia has stopped exporting sheep to Azerbaijan this year, Trend reports referring to National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

As reported, in 2019, Azerbaijan purchased 2,233.9 tonnes of sheep worth $4.7 million from Georgia.

Sheep breeders called the restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic the main reason for the cessation of exports to Azerbaijan.

However, coronavirus did not prevent the export of sheep from Georgia to Saudi Arabia. From January through May 2020, 578.9 tons of sheep worth $2.08 million were exported from Georgia to this country.

Last year, 1,799.6 tons of sheep worth $5.18 million were exported from Georgia to Saudi Arabia. Both years, exports were carried out by sea.

From January through May 2020, trade turnover between Georgia and Azerbaijan amounted to $409.1 million.
