It is planned to begin to export hazelnuts from Azerbaijan to Egypt, Pakistan and Italy this year, Ismayil Orujov, president of the Azerbaijan Hazelnut Producers and Exporters Association told Trend.

“The peeled hazelnuts have been one of the most exported products of the non-oil sector since the beginning of the year,” Orujov added. "The export volume of hazelnuts from Azerbaijan reached 8,459 tons from January through May. The revenues from the export of hazelnuts reached $52.2 million. Some 1,407 tons of hazelnuts worth $8.9 million were exported in May."

“Russia and some EU countries have been the priority countries in terms of export since the beginning of the year,” president of the association added.

Hazelnuts are mainly grown in Azerbaijan’s Gakh, Zagatala and Balakan districts.

The association was established in 2016 and it includes 60 organizations now.

Today, Turkey is the biggest producer of hazelnuts in the world with a 75-percent share in the global market. Azerbaijan’s share in the world is only four percent. However, according to foreign media, the country has great potential for further growth in this sphere.
