Iran's parliament reviews plan on pre-sale of crude oil to citizens

TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 18

Trend:

The spokesman of the Energy Commission of the Iranian parliament said that during the commission meeting on Aug. 16, the deputy chairman of the economic commission of the presented a report about the pre-sale crude oil plan, Trend reports citing ILNA.

Malek Shariati Niasar announced that the report covered the "process of examining the of oil pre-sale plan" which was discussed at the meetings of the Supreme Council for Economic Coordination.

He noted that the review of the priorities of the Energy Commission of the Parliament also was on the agenda of the meeting.

Iran has decided to pre-sell the country's oil, the main source of the Islamic Republic's income, to its citizens by offering oil bonds and the government has said it intends to put the oil on the stock market in the framework of an "economic breakthrough".

The chief of staff of the president of Iran Mahmoud Vaezi said in a rare comment that anyone who "can buy from 50,000 to 100,000 barrels of oil on the energy stock market could get a small ship and export it."

Officials say it is an attempt to overcome the budget deficit the government faces amid the suffocating sanctions imposed on the country by the US as well as the economic impact that country has faced over the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani promoted the plan during a meeting with his cabinet members saying that it is "a safe investment for the people" to be made instead of investing in the gold and foreign currency market.
