Future concept: Kazakhstan envisions digitalized polypropylene plant

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 29

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

The concept of the future plant for the production of polypropylene in Kazakhstan’s Atyrau region oversees complete digitalization, KazMunayGas National Company’s official told Trend.

The integrated gas chemical complex project was placed under management of KMG in June 2018. Since then, the construction has entered its active phase, the progress has increased from 6 to 74 percent.

The complex will allow producing up to 500,000 tons of polypropylene annually. The construction of the plant is to be finished in 2021.

"The construction of the Integrated Gas Chemical Complex in the Atyrau region is one of the largest projects of the last decade in Kazakhstan. The project itself consists of two stages. The first stage is the construction of a plant for the production of polypropylene," the official said.

The second stage provides for the construction of a venture for production of polyethylene.

"To date, the feasibility study has been completed within the polyethylene production stage. The future plant’s capacity will be 1.2 million tons of product a year. The strategic partner for the project is to be looked for soon," the official said.

KazMunayGas official said that the construction of the Integrated Gas Chemical Complex is expected to become the base of the country’s petrochemical cluster, designed to produce goods of high added value.

"The key units used for the project are: propane dehydrogenation unit of 503,000 tons of propylene per year (Catofin technology) of capcity, polymerization unit of 500,000 tons of polypropylene per year (Novolen technology) of capacity," the official said.

Another distinctive feature of the project is that its concept provides for complete digitalization.

"That is, all processes starting from the acceptance of raw materials to the shipment of products will be fully automated and digitalized," the official said.
