Iran invests on water treatments to revive Urmia Lake

TEHRAN, Iran, Aug.31

The Iranian government has invested $119 million on water treatments in Urmia Lake watershed to revive the lake, said the manager of the planning department in the Urmia Lake Restoration Program.

"One of the solutions to revive Urmia Lake is to transfer water from the water treatment to the lake watershed the Urmia Lake Restoration Program has made considerable progress in this regard," said Masoud Tajrishi, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"The focus of the assigned credit is on the operation of water treatments in Tabriz and Urmia that started in 2014," he said.

"At the moment construction of water treatment in Urmia had 95 percent progress while the construction of the civil section of Tabriz water treatment has 71 percent progress," Tajrishi added.

"It is expected that 301.59 million cubic meters of water from water treatments would be transferred to Urmia Lake," he noted.

"Development of modern irrigation systems in Urmia Lake watershed is another measure that has been implemented by the Urmia Lake Restoration Program. Ministry of Agriculture has planned various methods to reduce water consumption and provide water right for reviving the lake," Tajrishi said
