Iran to soon action off electricity to cryptocurrency miners

TEHRAN, Iran, Sept. 21

Trend:

Iran will soon auction off electricity to cryptocurrency miners, generated from the Ramin, Neka and Shahid Montazeri power plants, said the CEO of Iran's Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH) Mohsen Tarztalab.

“Extreme foreign currency fluctuations and mandatory prices of electricity to subscribers have left a big gap between revenues and expenses in the country's electricity industry,” Tarztalab said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

He called the sale of electricity to cryptocurrency miners as one of the ways to earn money in the electricity sector.

The official went on to say that relevant equipment has been installed at the mentioned plants.

“There is a capacity of 30 to 40 MW of electricity generation from expanded power at the plants,” said Tarztalab. “At this stage, 15 MW is considered for allocation to crypto miners.”

He noted that “efforts are being made to use the income from to renovate and improve the power plants.”
