Kazakhstan taking measures to increase railway border stations capacities

Cargo turnover via railways between Kazakhstan and China is expected to amount to 21 million tons, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan railways.

The topic of Kazakhstan and China cooperation on railways was discussed during an online meeting Chairman of the Board of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (Kazakhstan Railways) Sauat Mynbayev and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chinese Railways Lu Dongfu.

As noted during the meeting the volume of cargo transportation via railway border stations between Kazakhstan and China amounted to 14.2 million tons over eight months of 2020, which is 30 percent more than in the same period of last year.

The meeting participants noted that special attention is being given to increasing of cargo transportation through Dostyk – Alashankou, and Altynkol – Khorgos border stations.

In this regard, Kazakhstan Railways is taking measures to develop transit capacities and is implementing a project for the development and modernization of Dostyk station’s infrastructure.

Thus, within the framework of the Nurly Zhol State Program for 2020-2025, the first stage of the project for modernization of Dostyk – Moyinty railway transport corridor is being implemented. Within the framework of the project, an overhaul of railway tracks is planned, as well as the construction of a number of railway infrastructure facilities.

All these steps will allow providing for unhindered, accelerated passage of trains through border stations, as well as for an increase of the transit traffic volume through Kazakhstan.

Implementation of these plans will also favorably affect the speed of container trains movement across Kazakhstan reaching 1,300 – 1,400 kilometers per day by 2025. The capacity of Dostyk station is also expected to reach 1 million TEU in the nearest future.
