EBRD and FAO to assist Georgia in field of agro tourism

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 25

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have put forward a new initiative for the Georgian tourism industry promotion, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Under this initiative, agro-tourism and Georgian traditional agro products will become an important factor for attracting tourists to the country. Namely, the new initiative makes a special focus on authentic Georgian products that may be tested locally.

Georgia is also using the Geographical Indication (GI) method, to prevent manufacturing and sale of fake goods. So, the GI method would help protect such products as Sulguni (brined Georgian cheese), Chechili cheese, Churchkhela (traditional Georgian cuisine candle-shaped candy). Eventually, the approach should help protect not just the goods, but also help increase the income of local farmers.

Sustainable agro-tourism will assist business operators, on one hand, to become more resilient to crisis period and increase Georgian traditional food production, on the other hand.

As part of the initiative, EBRD and FAO will assist domestic small companies in producing high-quality products to penetrate new markets such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes.
