Ukraine says energy sector, transport among priorities in co-op with Georgia

Among the priority spheres of bilateral cooperation between Georgia and Ukraine are the fuel and energy sector, transport, healthcare and tourism development, the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine told Trend.

The ministry said according to the results of 2019, Georgia ranks 37th in terms of the volume of bilateral trade in goods with Ukraine.

"In 2019, the volume of bilateral trade in goods amounted to $574.3 million, there was a decrease in trade volumes by 6.4 percent. At the same time, the export of goods from Ukraine to Georgia amounted to $392.6 million, a decrease of 18.2 percent, goods in Ukraine amounted to $181.7 million, an increase of 36 percent. Almost 55 percent of the bilateral trade is the share of agricultural products," the ministry said.

According to the ministry, one of the important intergovernmental instruments of bilateral cooperation in the economic sphere is the Joint Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Georgian Commission on Economic Cooperation.

"Within the framework of the said Commission, there is a bilateral Working Group on Cooperation, during its meetings, issues of the state and prospects of bilateral cooperation in trade in agricultural and food products, veterinary medicine, selection and seed production, viticulture and winemaking, research and development were discussed," the source said.

As the ministry noted, from October 1, the Ukrainian and Georgian sides completed the domestic procedures necessary for the entry into force of the Protocol between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of Georgia on amending the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Georgia on free trade of January 9, 1995, signed May 21, 2019.

"This agreement will provide an increase in opportunities for preferential trade in goods, attracting them to European and regional value chains," the ministry said.
