Azerbaijani tobacco farmers are harvesting a rich crop in 2020, Trend reports citing the Azerbaijani Ministry of Agriculture.
Thanks to careful observance of agrotechnical rules, a high level of organization of supplies of seedlings, fertilizers for plants, the average tobacco yield in 2020 increased.
According to the ministry, this year, tobacco was sown in Azerbaijan on an area of 3,144 hectares and grown on an area of 3,141 hectares.
"To date, 5,949 tons of tobacco have been harvested. Farmers have handed over 5,078 tons of dry tobacco to processing stations. At present, the average yield of tobacco is 18.9 centners per hectare. Harvesting in the fields continues, and it is expected that by the end of the season the average yield will increase," the message said.
In 2020, tobacco was planted in 12 districts of the country and in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. More than half of the cultivated area is located in Shaki, Gakh, and Oghuz districts, which are traditional districts for growing tobacco. This year, farmers of Zagatala, Balakan, Gabala, Tovuz, Ismayilli, Goranboy, Lerik, Masalli, and Yardimli districts also received a rich harvest.
On August 10, 2017, the head of state approved the state program ‘On the development of the production of tobacco and tobacco products in Azerbaijan’. It is scheduled for 2017-2021. One of its main goals is to increase the yield of tobacco up to 20 centners per hectare, expand the cultivated area for tobacco to 6,000 hectares, and increase production to 12,000 tons of tobacco.
