TEHRAN, Iran, Nov.20

Trend:

Water transfer projects for Iran are supply-oriented and they indicate that water could be supplied at any cost, while mismanagement in water transportation could lead to big challenges for provinces suffering from drought, said an expert on water-related issues, Mohammad Farzaneh, Trend reports via ILNA.

"In industrial and agriculture sectors water-related issues are concerning, due to mismanagement," Farzaneh said.

"If the supply oriented approach continues and supplying more amount of water could not solve the issue, we should reform the water consumption model in all sectors," he said.

"The heavy cost of water transportation to central plateau in Kerman Province could be substituted with low cost options. Investing half of country's public budget in one province would not be in favor of the country, while water transfer would be damaging to the environment," he said.

"The experience of water transfer projects in Tehran Province, show that even though a lot of water is supplied, the water consumption got worse, and the same situation could happen in Kerman Province," said Farzaneh.

The expert pointed out that the unbalanced consumption model would lead to cultural gap with neighboring provinces, he said.

"Mismanagement in assigning water would not be in favor of the country, the consumption models in agriculture and industrial sectors should be reformed, the current water consumption per capita in water irrigation is higher than rain fall while we are facing limitation of water resources," he said.
