Plastic cards becoming more popular in Kazakhstan

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 45.4 million cards as of Nov. 1, 2020, which is 45.6 percent more than as of Nov. 1, 2019 (31.2 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 34.2 million cards were debit cards, 9.5 million cards were credit cards, and 1.59 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 25.6 million were used over as of Nov. 1, 2020, compared to 19.1 million cards last year, which indicates a 34 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (9.05 million cards). Almaty city is followed by the Turkestan region, including Shymkent city (3.65 million cards), and Nur-Sultan city (3.21 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (2.2 million cards), which also is followed by the Turkestan region (1.08 million cards) and Nur-Sultan city (933,000 cards).

Some 37.9 million cardholders were registered in Kazakhstan as of Nov. 1, 2020, which indicates an increase of 36.2 percent year-on-year compared to 27.8 million on Nov. 1, 2019.

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan is 17, including those of the National Bank, systems of money transfers, and systems of plastic cards.
