BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 1

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

With some Belgian companies active in the energy sector (oil, gas, renewables) in Georgia and Azerbaijan, further projects linking Turkmenistan with the South-Caucasus could be of course of high interest as well for Belgium, Ambassador of Kingdom of Belgium to Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkmenistan, Bert Schoofs told Trend.

Furthermore, the ambassador noted that the signing of the Caspian Sea Agreement in 2018 between Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan was a milestone for the region.

“Therefore, Bert Schoofs, Ambassador of Belgium in Baku and accredited to Turkmenistan, took part in the 1st Caspian Economic Forum, hold in Avaza (Turkmenistan) in August 2019,” highlighted the ambassador.

In terms of the overall cooperation, Schoofs said that Turkmenistan is for Belgium a rather limited (in volume) but reliable trade partner.

Although, Belgium mainly imports textile products (75 percent) and exports machinery (50 percent) and chemical material (25 percent), said Schoofs.

The message also said that within Turkmenistan Belgian companies are active in textile machinery and equipment, logistics, and infrastructure.

“Moreover, Jan De Nul, one of the world’s biggest dredging companies, was a major partner in the construction of the new Turkmenbashi Caspian Sea Port (2014-2015), an important logistics point connecting Europe and Asia. Also, Belgian ‘Gosselin Moving and Mobility Solutions’ that is very present in the South-Caucasus with regional headquarters in Tbilisi (Georgia), is active in Turkmenistan and neighboring countries,” noted Schoofs.
