BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.11

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

Cotton picking in Azerbaijan has entered its final stage, Trend reports citing the Azerbaijani Ministry of Agriculture.

According to the ministry, 331,649 tons of cotton have been handed over to the processing points.

“Until December 11, farmers have harvested 331,649 tons of cotton from the fields and handed it over to receive points. This is 36,649 tons more than the final indicator of last year,” the ministry said.

At the end of 2019, cotton season, 295,000 tons of cotton were collected and transferred to the sites in the country.

According to operational data, the average yield for harvesting raw cotton is 33.2 centners per hectare, which is 3.7 centners more than last year's total figure.

The cotton-picking is expected to be completed at the optimal time, the message said.

In 2020, the largest number of cotton plantings was carried out in Saatli, Agjabadi, Barda, Bilasuvar, Sabirabad, and Beylagan districts.

The development of cotton growing in Azerbaijan is supported by the state.

Under the new subsidy mechanism, cotton farmers receive a crop subsidy. For each hectare of a cotton field, the farmer is provided with a subsidy of 220 manat ($129.4). Grown products, depending on the quality, are purchased at 550-650 manat ($323.5-$382.3) per ton.
