Azerbaijan to start exporting pomegranates to European markets

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 14

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Azerbaijan plans to export pomegranates to the markets of Europe and Austria in 2021, Chairman of the Pomegranate Producers and Exporters Association of Azerbaijan Farhad Garashov told Trend.

Recently, due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the world, the demand for pomegranate has increased, Garashov said.

Especially because of the presence of vitamin C in pomegranate, the demand for it in the domestic market of the country is quite high and, compared to last year, there is a clear increase, the chairman stressed.

During 2019, Azerbaijan’s revenues from the exports of pomegranate made up $17 million, he added.

Russia’s interest in the import of pomegranate and its products from Azerbaijan continues to rise significantly. Naturally, we do our best to expand the boundaries of the export of our products. As the Association of Pomegranate Producers and Exporters of Azerbaijan, we are continuously working to expand cooperation, Garashov added.

The Pomegranate Producers and Exporters Association of Azerbaijan has been operating since November 2016. In 2019, it turned out to be extremely fruitful. Thus, the number of members of the association increased almost 10 times. By the end of 2019, the number of members was 345 people, while in 2018 - 34. The association also works closely with international organizations to develop pomegranate cultivation.
