Iran reduces red meat imports

Iran has saved $1 billion by reducing red meat imports since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2020), said Morteza Rezaee, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad of Iran, Trend reports citing the ministry.

The deputy minister noted that Iran imported about 170,000 tons of red meat in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020).

Rezaee added that 140,000 tons of red meat were imported in the current Iranian year and red meat imports decreased by 30,000 tons.

“The price of red meat in Iran is cheaper than in Brazil, the world's largest red meat exporter,” he said.

The deputy minister stressed moreover, Iran imported 50,000 tons of butter worth $250 million from European countries in recent years. While in the current Iranian year, this figure is less than 5,000 tons.

As reported, the price of 1 kg of beef in Iran is between 750,000 - 1.19 million rials (about $17.8-$28.3), and the price of 1 kg of mutton is between 950,000 - 2.19 million rials (about $22.6 to $52), at present.
