Georgia sees increase in garlic imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 9

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Garlic production in Georgia is decreasing every year, Trend reports via the EastFruit portal.

In 2019 the production of garlic was cut by half in Georgia.

If in 2018 the country produced 4,600 tons of garlic, then in 2019 this figure dropped to 2,100 tons. According to the same data, the highest rate in the country was recorded in 2013, when the garlic harvest amounted to 7,200 tons.

However, in parallel with these figures, imports also grew. In particular, according to the National Statistics Service of Georgia (Geostat), in 2018 the country purchased 501 tons of garlic, in 2019 - 1,437 tons, and in 2020 already 2,845 tons.

According to the founder of the “Farmer of the Future” organization Rusudan Gigashvili, in the case of annual crops, there is no research and analysis of the domestic market, therefore, producers have no opportunity for planning.

“In general, in the case of annual crops, it is very difficult to predict. With garlic, 5 years ago, there was a shortage of products, and prices for garlic soared. The next year, all the farmers decided to plant garlic without fail. And as a result, we got overproduction," he said.

Therefore, it is very difficult to calculate all this correctly without preliminary planning, he noted.
