BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 1

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

A total of 907,000 tons of goods worth $464 million were exported to Iraq through the Mehran customs in the Ilam Province (western Iran) during the first 11 months of the current year (March 20, 2020 through February 18, 2021), Director General of Ilam Province Customs Office Rouhollah Gholami told IRNA, Trend reports.

Gholami stressed that the exported goods were mainly construction materials, fruits and vegetables, rubber, industrial products, glass materials, household appliances and metal products.

Meanwhile, in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2019 through March 19, 2020) 2.07 million tons of goods worth $1.18 billion were exported through this customs, he added.

The director general noted that the main reason for the decline in exports through the Mehran customs was the non-operation of the customs due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. So, the activities of this customs were suspended until May 10.

At present, 20 Iraqi trucks enter the Mehran border terminal every day for the transporting of goods to Iraq.

As reported, the border city of Mehran in Iran's Ilam Province is considered the closest Iranian city to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The distance between these cities is about 230 km.
