OECD recommends steps to develop export-oriented agriculture sector of Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 1

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The contraction in global FDI flows occasioned by the crisis will make it even harder to attract the investments needed for the agriculture sector to realize its potential in Georgia, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) told Trend.

"In order to develop a more productive, export-oriented sector, we would recommend a number of steps, including full implementation of the land registration reform; stronger provision of credit guarantees for agri-food SMEs; further investments in transport and utility infrastructures, and improvements in logistics services; rehabilitation of outdated irrigation infrastructure and drainage systems and improved internet access in rural areas; and programs to help develop supply chain linkages between foreign firms/investors and local SMEs," the source noted.

The OECD also sees room to improve extension services and vocational training systems and to strengthen food safety and quality standards.

As the source noted, attracting FDI can help to boost exports of high-value food products, leading to increases in wages and productivity.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is an intergovernmental economic organization with 37 member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade.
