Swiss government eyes to implement new agricultural program in Georgia

With the support of the Swiss government, a new agricultural program will be implemented in Georgia, Trend reports via the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia.

The program is designed for 2022-2025, its annual budget is $10 million.

Swiss Ambassador to Georgia Patrick Franzen spoke about the new program of regional cooperation at a meeting with the head of the Georgian Ministry of agriculture Levan Davitashvili. According to the diplomat, the Swiss government will approve the program in July 2021.

The new program will contribute to the economic development of rural areas and the improvement of the social conditions of rural residents. Farmers will be able to take part in international training programs.

The new program provides support for the development of the livestock sector, the development of bio-production in the field of the environment. In addition, attention will be paid to supporting the reform of the forestry sector, as well as cooperation in the field of climate change.

Georgia and Switzerland established diplomatic relations in June 1992. Since then, the countries have been cooperating in the fields of tourism and agriculture.

Since May 2018, the countries have entered into a free trade agreement. The foreign trade turnover between Georgia and Switzerland in 2020 amounted to $168.7 million, including exports from Georgia - $106.8 million, imports to Georgia - $61.9 million.
