Trend:

Foreign shipping lines are expected to return to Iran after possible revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), said the secretary of Iranian Merchant Mariners Syndicate Saman Rezaei, Trend reports via IRNA.

"The range of readiness of domestic shipping companies would determine the share of foreign companies in the market and it is necessary that the shipping industry and mariners prepare for the post-sanctions period," he said.

"While the domestic industries had the chance to become self-sufficient, the process was not consistent, and we hope both production and industry would flourish after the revival of the JCPOA and the lifting of sanctions," he said.

"More than 180 ships, organizations and individuals were sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2018," he said.

"The maritime industry has been damaged in recent years due to sanctions, in addition to declining trade, worn out ships, etc.," he said.

"It is recommended to maritime industry sets proper goals to improve the economy, once the sanctions are lifted," he said.

"The national fleet is old. We should be able to import new ships and return to international markets," he said.
