Iran boosts production, export of greens and vegetables

The production of greens and vegetables in Iran increased by 2.5 percent in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), compared to the preceding Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 through March 19, 2020), Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad and Director General of the ministry’s Fodder and Vegetable Production Bureau, Hossein Asghari said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

The deputy minister emphasized that 28.8 million tons of greens and vegetables were produced in Iran over the last Iranian year. While in the preceding Iranian year, this figure was 28.1 million tons.

“In addition, the exports of greens and vegetables in Iran increased by 22 percent during last Iranian year, compared to the preceding Iranian year. So, Iran exported 4.58 million tons of greens and vegetables last Iranian year. However, 3.73 million tons of greens and vegetables had been exported from Iran in the preceding Iranian year,” he added.

According to Asghari, the seed production on greens and vegetables in Iran also increased by 215 percent in the last Iranian year, compared to the preceding Iranian year. So, if 190 tons of seeds were produced in preceding Iranian, this figure increased to 599 tons last Iranian year.

The director-general noted that moreover, the production of hybrid seeds of cucumber and tomato for the last Iranian year increased by 356 percent compared to the preceding Iranian year. So, the production of hybrid seeds increased from 4.6 million units to 21 million units within the last Iranian year.

Reportedly, Iran exported more than 7 million tons of agricultural and food products worth $6.17 billion over the last Iranian year. The exports increased by 8 percent in terms of value and 26 percent in terms of volume compared to the preceding Iranian year.
