Iran discloses volume of sprat caught from Caspian Sea

Iran caught more than 20,000 tons of sprat from the Caspian Sea over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), the Director-General for Fishing Affairs of Iran Fisheries Organization, Mokhtar Akhondi said, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

According to him, 71 percent of sprat were caught in Mazandaran Province and 29 percent in Gilan Province last Iranian year.

Akhondi added that sprat fishing in the Mazandaran Province decreased by 28 percent and while in the Gilan Province it increased by 21 percent.

The director general noted that more than 95 percent of the caught sprat belongs to the common species, and the rest to the anchovy species.

Akhondi said that Iran is currently engaged in sprat fishing with 74 ships in the Caspian Sea. Some 44 of them are in the Mazandaran Province and 30 in the Gilan Province.
