An additional 100 electric chargers for electric vehicles will be installed in Georgian Tbilisi within the next year, said vice-mayor of the capital Irakli Khmaladze, Trend reports referring to the Georgian media.
He made the remark at the presentation of the report reforms in the field of transport policy in Georgia.
For several years now, the Georgian authorities have been actively promoting the idea of switching to electric vehicles, which will help protect the environment and improve the ecology.
"In order to promote electric vehicles, the mayor's office has launched a new project. This is the installation of chargers on demand. The mayor's office has already installed electric chargers in 38 locations. A tender procedure is underway today, and another 100 chargers will be installed over the next year," Khmaladze said.
The government aims to replace 90 percent of the country's car fleet with electric vehicles over the next few years. In the spring of 2019, the authorities announced the construction of a plant for the production of electric vehicles. The Georgian holding IGroup signed a corresponding memorandum with the Chinese Changan Automobile consortium. There are plans to produce about 5,000 cars in the first 1,5 years since the opening of the plant. However, the project has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
