BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 13

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

More than 10 varieties of local and foreign cotton are grown on Iranian plantations, the executor of the cotton plan of Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran, Ebrahim Hezarjaribi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

Hezarjaribi noted that as a result of a recent study by a cotton research institute in Iran, two varieties of fast-growing cotton have been started to be planted. These cotton varieties grow quickly and need little watering during droughts.

The official added that this variety of cotton is met with great interest by farmers and thus, the area under cotton in the country's cotton-growing provinces is growing.

As reported, the cotton is planted on a total of 115,000 hectares of land in 18 provinces of Iran in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021, through March 20, 2022), and 327,000 tons of raw cotton is projected to be harvested.

Iran's demand for cotton in the textile sector increased from 120,000 tons to 150,000 tons in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020, through March 20, 2021).

About 270,000 tons of raw cotton were harvested in Iran over the last Iranian year. About 120,000 tons of raw cotton without seeds were produced from it. About 80,000 tons of cotton out of 120,000 tons of raw cotton without seeds were supplied to the country's textile industry. Iran's textile industry needs 120,000 tons of cotton a year.
