The area under cotton in the Ardabil Province (north-western Iran) has increased ten times over the past five years, Director of Agriculture Department of Ardabil Province Khalil Nikshad told IRNA, Trend reports.
According to him, cotton has been planted on 15,000 hectares of land in the Mughan plain of the province in the current planting year in Iran (from September 22, 2020, through September 22, 2021), which is an increase of 30 percent compared to last year.
Nikshad added that 60,000 tons of raw cotton without seeds are expected to be produced in Ardabil Province this year.
The director noted that the plan on the growing of seed barley and wheat in the province has been implemented by 70 percent. At present, 20,000 tons of seed wheat and barley are grown in the Ardabil Province.
As reported, cotton was planted on a total of 115,000 hectares of land in 18 provinces of Iran in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022) and 327,000 tons of raw cotton are estimated to be harvested.
Iran's demand for cotton in the textile sector increased from 120,000 tons to 150,000 tons in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020, through March 20, 2021).
About 270,000 tons of raw cotton were harvested in Iran over the last Iranian year. About 120,000 tons of raw cotton without seeds were produced from it. About 80,000 tons of cotton out of 120,000 tons of raw cotton without seeds were supplied to the country's textile industry. Iran's textile industry needs 120,000 tons of cotton a year.
