Iran accounts for about 3 percent of the world's agricultural and food waste, an official of Iran Plant Protection Organization Masoud Latifian told ILNA, Trend reports.
The official noted that the volume of waste in agricultural and food production in Iran amounts to about 30 percent annually.
Latifian added that Iran currently produces an average of 100 million tons of agricultural products per year. About 16.5 million tons of it are disposed of as waste.
“About 90 percent of the waste is accounted for 60 types of horticulture products and crops,” he said.
According to Latifian, in Iran, waste is accounted for 34 percent of annual grape production, 31 percent of mandarin production, 30 percent of each orange, peach and cherry production, 28 percent of apple production, 26 percent of lemon production, 25 percent of pomegranate production, 20 percent of date production.
