Iran aims to catch 700,000 tons of various fish in the northern and southern waters of the county in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021, through March 20, 2022), the Director-General for Fishing Affairs of Iran Fisheries Organization, Mokhtar Akhondi said, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.
Akhondi emphasized that 715,000 tons of various fish were caught in the northern and southern waters of Iran over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020, through March 20, 2021). This is an increase of 8 percent compared to the current plan.
The director general added that about 684,000 tons of fish were caught in the southern waters of Iran and 31,000 tons in the Caspian Sea last Iranian year.
“Over the past few years, Iran has ranked first in the west part of Indian Ocean, second in the Indian Ocean, and 12th in the world,” he noted.
According to Akhondi, 140,000 people are currently engaging in fishing in Iran.
