East Azerbaijan Province is Iran's main exporter of dates – Iranian official

The East Azerbaijan Province, which is located in the northwest of Iran is the main exporter of dates in the country, Director of Agriculture Department of East Azerbaijan Province Akbar Fathi said, Trend reports citing the department’s website.

According to him, over 20,000 tons of dates are exported annually from Iran's East Azerbaijan Province.

Fathi added that dates are mainly exported to Russia, Turkey, Georgia, European countries, including Germany.

The director also pointed out due to climatic conditions, dates are not grown in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province. It is brought to the province from 5 provinces of Iran – Fars, Bushehr, Kerman, Hormozgan, Sistan, and Baluchestan.

“The East Azerbaijan Province has been engaging on processing and packing of dates for about 12 years. At present, there are 15 factories operating in the province in this regard,” he said.

Reportedly, there are about 250,000 hectares of date orchards in Iran. Iran grows an average of 1 million tons of dates a year.
