Iran shares data on pomegranate harvesting

Iran is expected to harvest about 1.2 million tons of pomegranate in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), said Zahra Jalili Moqaddam, Director-General of Agriculture Ministry’s Tropical and Subtropical Fruit Bureau, Trend reports citing the ministry.

The director general noted that there are 90,000 hectares of pomegranate orchards in Iran. It is planned to harvest 14 tons of pomegranate from each hectare.

"Iran ranks third in the world in terms of pomegranate cultivation. India, China, Iran, Turkey and the US are the main countries on pomegranate cultivation," he added.

Jalili Moqaddam said that pomegranate is mainly cultivated in Iran’s Fars, Razavi Khorasan, Isfahan, Yazd, Semnan, Qom, South Khorasan and Lorestan provinces.

The official also pointed out that Iran exported 729 tons of pomegranate worth $406,000, during the first seven months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through October 22, 2021). Pomegranate exports from Iran are mainly carried out in the second half of the year.

"Meanwhile, in the last Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), 12,000 tons of pomegranates worth $5.5 million were exported from Iran," he said.
