The activity of 20 small-scale mines in the South Khorasan Province (north-eastern Iran) will be restored by the end of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021, through March 20, 2022), the Head of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), Vajihollah Jafari said, Trend reports citing the ministry.
According to Jafari, there are 216 small-scale inactive mines in the province. So far, 22 of them have been resumed.
He also added that with the restoration of these mines, the volume of extractable minerals in the province will increase by about 2.8 million tons.
In addition, exploration operations have been completed at 7 points in an area of 25,000 square kilometers in the South Khorasan Province, the official noted.
Jafari said that 8 licenses have been issued to conduct exploration operations in an area of about 220 square kilometers in the province this year. There are reserves of iron, zinc, lead, gold, copper, and coal in these areas.
About 4.86 million tons of minerals are extracted annually from 70 mines in Iran's South Khorasan Province. These mines produce iron, copper, manganese, gold, lead, and zinc.
