BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 17. A total of 82,000 tons of tea worth more than 6.99 trillion rials (about $166 million) have been purchased from farmers in Iran since the beginning of the current tea harvesting season (started on April 21, 2022) in the country, the Chairman of the Iran Tea Organization, Habib Jahansaz said, Trend reports citing the organization.

The chairman emphasized that about 54,500 tons of purchased tea leaves were 1st grade, while the rest - were in the 2nd grade.

“So far, 6.17 trillion rials (about $147 million) has been paid to the farmers for purchased tea leaves, which is 88 percent of the total amount,” he added.

According to Jahansaz, within the current season, contracts were signed with more than 160 tea factories for the purchase of tea leaves.

The official also noted that more than 18,500 tons of dry tea have been produced in the country during this season.

In Iran, some products such as rice, sugar beet, wheat, and tea are purchased from farmers by the Government Trade Corporation (GTC) of Iran under a guarantee and paid for in installments.

The price of first-grade tea leaves is 92,000 rials (about $2.19), and second-grade tea leaves are 71,000 rials (about $1.69) this season.
