BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 12. The area under wheat in Iran is expected to increase to 6 million hectares for the current planting year (September 23, 2022 through March 20, 2023), an official of the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad Sohrab Sohrabi said, Trend reports citing IANA.

“Currently, the area under wheat in the country is more than 5 million hectares, while in the last planting year (September 23, 2021 through March 20, 2022), the figure was 4.9 million hectares,” Sohrabi noted.

The official also added that at present, wheat cultivation continues in various provinces of the country.

According to him, some sources report that 10 million tons of wheat were harvested in the last planting year. However, a total of 11.5 million tons of wheat were harvested in the mentioned year, which is a 45-percent increase compared to the previous planting year.

Sohrabi also pointed out that 7.5 million tons of the mentioned amount were purchased by Iran’s Government Trading Corporation (GTC), 1.2 million tons were allocated as seeds, 2 million tons of wheat were purchased by various companies, and 800,000 tons of wheat were kept by the farmers in the villages.

The official said that the price of 1 kg of wheat was set up at 130,000 rials (about $3.09) for the current year.
