BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 7. The volume of bony fish caught from the Caspian Sea in Iran’s Mazandaran Province, increased by 161 percent in value and 12 percent in volume, from the beginning of the current fishing season from the Caspian Sea in Iran (October 9, 2022) to January 1, 2023, compared to the same period last Iranian year, Director General of the Iran Fisheries Organization for Mazandaran Province Ghasem Karimzadeh said, Trend reports citing the organization’s website.

“In total, more than 880 tons of bony fish worth 1.74 trillion rials (about $41.4 million) were caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran’s Mazandaran Province within the mentioned period,” he said.

The director general added that of the mentioned volume, 51 percent accounted for mullet, 36 percent for Caspian kutum, 11 percent for carp, and 2 percent for other fish species.

Generally, 50 fishing companies and about 4,000 fishermen work in the province. Fishing has a fundamental role in the income and livelihood of the population in Mazandaran Province.

Karimzadeh noted that on average, each company caught about 18 tons of bony fish during the reporting period.
