BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 23. In general, over 2.72 million square meters of hand-made carpets were woven in Iran, during the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through December 21, 2022), Director of the National Carpet Center of Iran Farahnaz Rafe said, Trend reports citing Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
“Meanwhile, in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), a total of approximately 3.33 million square meters of carpets were woven in the country, which is 46 percent more than the previous year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021). The figure stood at 2.26 million square meters in the preceding year,” he said.
Rafe added that carpet weaving in the country is mainly carried out in villages and among nomads.
The director also pointed out that about 10 million people are engaged in carpet weaving in Iran.
Although carpet weaving has increased in Iran in recent years, the export of carpets has been decreasing. In this regard, the Head of the Association of Handmade Carpet Sellers, Masoud Sepehrzad said that the value of Iran's hand-made carpet exports amounted to approximately $64 million in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022).
This figure stood at $55 million in the previous Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021).
The chairman also noted that the country's hand-made carpet exports amounted to $2 billion annually 30 years ago.
