BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 27. The volume of bony fish caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran has increased by about 66 percent since the beginning of the current Caspian Sea fishing season in the country (October 9, 2022 to February 20, 2023), compared to the same period of the previous season, an official of Iran Fisheries Organization Mostafa Behishtian said, Trend reports citing Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

According to Behishtian, in total, 3,610 tons of bony fish in various species were caught in the Caspian Sea within the mentioned period.

“About 46 percent of bony fish was caught in Iran’s Gilan Province, 52 percent in Mazandaran Province and 6 percent in Golestan Province,” he added.

The official also pointed out that of the mentioned volume, 72 percent accounted for mullet, 24 percent for trout, 2 percent for carp and 2 percent for other fish species.

Meanwhile, some 117 out of 123 fishing companies in Iran are engaged in bony fish fishing in the country. Of this, 49 are in Gilan Province, 52 in Mazandaran Province and 16 in Golestan Province

There are more than 15 species of bony fish in the Caspian Sea. The species that Iran catches are mainly Caspian kutum, carp, and mullet. The main part of bony fish caught by Iran from the Caspian Sea is consumed in 3 main provinces - Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan - located on the coast of the Caspian Sea, while a part is sent to Tehran Province.
