BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 5. The volume of bony fish caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran has increased by 82 percent since the beginning of the current Caspian Sea fishing season in the country (October 9, 2022, to March 30, 2023), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Abbas Pour Naderi said, Trend reports citing the organization.
According to him, approximately 6,000 tons of bony fish were caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran within the mentioned period.
“Of the mentioned volume, 3,323 tons were caught in Iran’s Mazandaran Province, 2,398 tons in Gilan Province and 278 tons in Golestan Province,” Pour Naderi said.
The official added that the volume of bony fish caught in Mazandaran Province for the reporting period increased by 98 percent, in Gilan Province by 69 percent, and in Golestan Province 69 percent compared to the same period in the previous Iranian year.
The deputy also noted that 3,080 tons of mullet and 2,612 tons of Caspian kutum were caught for the reporting period.
There are 136,000 fishermen operating in the north and south of Iran. About 9,500 of them are engaged in fishing in the Caspian Sea in the north of the country, and the remaining 126,500 people are engaged in fishing in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south of the country.
As reported, fishing in the Caspian Sea in Iran begins in early October and lasts until April 20.
Meanwhile, Iran caught a total of 9,714 tons of various bony fish in the Caspian Sea during the last fishing season (October 7, 2021, through April 20, 2022) in the country. This is a decrease of approximately 14 percent compared to the previous season. So, the figure stood at 11,061 tons in the previous season.
