Iran intends to boost local shrimp farming, expects solid yield

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 19. The volume of shrimp farmed in Iran is expected to increase by 35 percent for the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024), compared to the last Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), an official of the Iran Fisheries Organization Vahid Madani said, Trend reports.

“In total, approximately 86,000 tons of shrimp are expected to be farmed in the country this year,” he noted.

The official also added that more than 60,000 tons of shrimp were farmed in the Iran over the last Iranian.

According to Madani, more than 6 billion baby shrimps should be provided to farm the mentioned volume of shrimp. Baby shrimps are bred in more than 40 centers across country. Last year, 5.9 billion baby shrimps were bred in the country.

The area of shrimp farms in Iran is more than 16,000 hectares. In order to increase the mentioned figure to over 220,000 hectares, Iran plans to create new shrimp farms. Also, Iran plans to farm 160,000 tons of shrimp in 2026.
