BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 30. The shrimp catch in Hormozgan Province, which is located in the south of Iran along the Persian Gulf, rose by 17 percent in the last 29 days (from September 30 to October 28, 2023), compared to the same period last year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Reza Abbaspour Naderi said, Trend reports.
Naderi mentioned that 494 tons of shrimp were harvested in Hormozgan Province during that time.
He added that two types of shrimp were mainly caught in the province: Banana Prawn and Metapenaeus affinis. The harvest of Metapenaeus affinis increased by 50 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, while the harvest of Banana Prawn dropped by 4 percent.
The official also said that most of the shrimp caught in Hormozgan Province were consumed locally or in nearby provinces, and only a small amount was exported.
He further noted that the shrimp fishing season in Hormozgan Province lasted for 45 days.
On average, Iran produces 60,000 tons of shrimp per year, of which about 60 percent is exported and 40 percent is consumed domestically. The main provinces for shrimp farming and fishing are Khuzestan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Golestan.
