BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 3. Iran and Türkiye have set a goal to transport 1 million tons of cargo by rail between the two countries in 2024, CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (IRIR), Miad Salehi said, Trend reports.

The deputy minister noted that 200 wagons would cross the Razi border customs every day to achieve this goal.

Salehi, who visited Türkiye this week, met with Hasan Pezuk, the general director of the State Railways of Türkiye, and Ufuk Yalcin, the head of the freight department of the State Railways of Türkiye. They discussed the necessary steps and the removal of barriers to reach the target number.

The CEO also mentioned that they agreed with the Türkiye side to increase the transit of cargo through Türkiye towards European countries. He added that Türkiye, as the gateway to Asia from Europe, could enable the transportation of goods to Europe via the China-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Türkiye route, which could be a turning point to increase international cargo transportation.

Salehi added that this route was possible due to the previous agreements that Iran had with China, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

In total, nearly 9.5 million tons of cargo were transited through Iran's roads and railways in the first 8 months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through November 21).
