BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 31. Iran's corn imports increased by 12.9 percent in value and 19.6 percent in volume in the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through January 20, 2024), compared to the same period last year, Trend reports.

Data from the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) shows that Iran imported corn valued at $3.22 billion, weighing 8.44 million tons during ten months.

In the corresponding period of the previous Iranian year, 7.05 million tons of corn, worth $2.85 billion, were imported into the country.

On average, Iran consumes 9 million tons of corn per year but only produces about 13 percent, or roughly 1.2 million tons, of that amount domestically. The rest is imported from other countries.

The IRICA's latest data shows that Iran’s overall imports stood at 32.7 million tons, worth $54.3 billion, in the first 10 months of the current Iranian year, representing an 11.6 percent increase in value and a 6 percent increase in volume year-on-year.

In general, Iran mainly focuses on the import of essential products needed by the country and applies certain restrictions on the import of goods produced domestically.
