BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 1. Iran’s bony fish catching in the Caspian Sea dropped by 5 percent from October 17, 2023 through January 31, 2024, compared to the same period last year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Reza Abbaspour Naderi said, Trend reports.
The deputy chairman noted that 2,095 tons of bony fish were caught in the Caspian Sea in the specified period.
He also said that Iran caught 1,032 tons of trout, 837 tons of mullet, 189 tons of carp, and 37 tons of other fish from the Caspian Sea.
Abbaspour Naderi added that compared to the same period last year, trout fishing rose by 63 percent, carp fishing grew by 83 percent, while mullet fishing dropped by 42 percent.
Iran catches bony fish from the Caspian Sea in the waters of Mazandaran, Gilan, and Golestan provinces. So, 1,146 tons of bony fish were caught in Mazandaran province, 866 tons in Gilan province and 83 tons in Golestan province during the reporting period.
Last season (October 9, 2022 through March 30, 2023), 6,000 tons of bony fish were caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran.
At present, 347 cooperatives are engaged in fishing in the north and south of the country. There are 136,000 fishermen operating in the north and south of Iran. About 9,500 of them are engaged in fishing in the Caspian Sea in the north of the country, and the remaining 126,500 people are engaged in fishing in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south of the country.
