BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 26. Iran’s sprat fishing in the Caspian Sea rose by 8 percent for the first 11 months of current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through February 19, 2024), compared to the same period of the previous year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Reza Abbaspour Naderi said, Trend reports.
According to Abbaspour Naderi, Iran caught 18,482 tons of sprats from the Caspian Sea in 11 months.
He added that Iran’s sprat fishing industry involved 73 ships in this time frame. They harvested an average of 253 tons of sprats per ship, which is a 10 percent increase from the previous year’s average.
More than 90 percent of the sprats caught in the Caspian Sea by Iran are used to make fish powder. Sprat is more nutritious than many bony fish, and that is why it is turned into fish powder. To preserve the sprat population in the Caspian Sea, fishing there in spring is not allowed.
