ADB ready to participate in 10-year strategy on transport sector development in Azerbaijan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has expressed its readiness to support the Azerbaijani government in designing a 10-year strategy and investment program on upgrade of the transport sector for the period till 2015.

The assistance can be rendered in the improvement and analysis of the state investment plan in the sphere of road transport, Trend reports quoting the head of the Baku office of the ADB, Matthew Westfal. The approximate budget of the 10-year investing plan is $1.47bn. The ADB is ready to render long-term assistance on the base of programs, Westfall underscored.

The Azerbaijani government accepts the banks assistance not only as financial aid, but also assistance in the improvement of the legislation in improvement of reforms and management in the transport sector. The ADB can assist in the development of goods projects basing on the international experience, efficient implementation of projects.

The Azerbaijani Transport Minister, Ziya Mammadov, said that strategy and program have been developed and presented to the consideration of the government. In accordance with the procedures it will be adopted upon coordination with the relevant state bodies. The cist of the project will be clarified following the implementation of the projects.

Over 6 months a list of projects to be financed by the ADB within the framework of the strategy will be defined. The financing of projects on the reconstruction of east-west transport corridor (Yevlakh-Ganja and Gazakh-Ganja) and the south transport corridor (Masally-Astara) and roads of the second level in the nearest perspective are part of this list.
