Ford planning diesel Expedition

(autoinsidernews) - After Ford confirmed that it would be offering the F-150 with an optional diesel powerplant starting in 2008 or 2009, speculation was that the same diesel engine would find its way under the hood of the Expedition. The Expedition's chief engineer, John Viera, said that a diesel Expedition is part of Ford's plans and would be offered by the end of the decade. Although final approval hasn't been given yet, the diesel Expedition could arrive around the same time as the diesel F-150.

While specifics of the new light-duty diesel haven't been announced, it is likely to be a larger version of the 3.6L V8 used in European Land Rovers, reports Trend.

Viera said that the diesel makes sense for the extended-length Expedition versions, which essentially replace the discountinued Excursion. Before the the Excursion was cancelled, diesel power accounted for about 60 percent of sales. Viera also said that vehicles with fuel-efficient engines are at the top of buyer's lists. The diesel may also find its way under the hood of the Lincoln Navigator.
