Demand in Europe for Import Gas will Reach 70%: Edison

Azerbaijan, Baku, 11 March / corr. Trend A. Badalova/ The demand in Europe for gas will reach 638bln cu.m in 2013 as compared with 558bln cu.m in 2006. According to a forecast by the Italian gas company Edison, the demand for gas in Europe will rise by almost 13% by 2020 totaling up to 720bln cu.m, the Company reported on its website.

Edison, which is holding talks with Azerbaijan on the purchase of gas, said that the dependence in Europe to import gas will make up 70% after 12 years which will total to 500bln cu.m. The dependence in Europe for gas totaled 45% in 2006.

According to Edison who is constructing the gas pipeline Poseidon together with the Greek company DEPA which will run to Italy via the Adriatic Sea, the demand in Europe for gas for electricity purposes will rise to 259bln cu.m in 2020 against 212bln cu.m in 2013. In 2020, the European population will raise their demand for gas by 7% up to 234 bln cu.m as compared to 218bln cu.m in 2013.

Some 310bln cu.m of gas will be transported to Europe through pipelines by 2020 while 119bln cu.m of gas will account for the liquefied natural gas.

According to company Nabucco Gas Pipeline International which is the operator of the construction of the Nabucco gas pipeline, the demand in Europe for gas will reach 68% by 2020. In 2010, the industries of some 27 European Union countries will consume 128mln tons of oil equivalent and the energy sector - 158mln tons of oil equivalent. In 2020, the industries of some 27 European Union countries will consume 145mln tons of oil equivalent and energy sector - 209mln tons of oil equivalent.
