Azerbaijan, Baku, 19 March / corr. Trend S. Aliyev/ There is a need for additional calculations for the implementation of the White Stream gas project initiated by Ukraine, Natig Aliyev, the minister of industry and energy of Azerbaijan said in his exclusive interview with Trend .

"It is ncessary to calculate the economy of the project, its security, ecological impact and other issues," the minister said.

According to the minister, it is important to determine the exact routes of gas supply via White Stream as additional gas pipelines, especially through the bottom of the Black Sea, are required to be constructed for this purpose, Aliyev said.

The minister said that if Azerbaijan has enough gas volumes for transportation via this route, the project can be implemented. It might occur after opening of new gas fields in the country, development of gas reserves in the Deepwater section of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli fields.

The White Stream project which was initiated by Yulia Timoshenko during her visit in Brussels in February envisages the construction of the gas pipeline starting from Turkmenistan through Azerbaijan to the Georgian port of Supsa and onwards through the bottom of Black sea and through the Crimea to the European Union countries.

Brendan Devlin, the assistant to the EU coordinator on south gas transport projects of the East-West corridor said in February that EU is interested in the implementation of White Stream project which will enable to diversify gas supply of the European Union. According to Devlin, the project can be financed from the technical point of view by the financial instruments to realize of the projects on establishment of unified Trans European energy network.
